The production, distribution and consumption of chang'aa (homemade liquor) is illegal. However, this does not stop enterprising Kenyans from engaging in the business. The police and the local administration all benefit from this and make half-hearted attempts at getting rid of the lethal liquors and brews. Chang'aa is potent and popular among those who cannot afford beer and other authorized liquor. Chang'aa related poisoning, caused by the component methanol has been on the rise. The victims are often rendered blind, and worse, dead. The Diaper Mentality campaign exposes some of the irresponsible habits plaguing Kenyan society and the damage this causes on people around.
